Reduce Reuse Recycle

United States
I often think about Mother Earth and what I should be doing to make a difference. You see, I grew up with a reduce/reuse/recycle mindset. So what changed? Did I become lazy? Or did I just do what was most convenient and easy for me?  I’m still trying to figure that out myself...

One thing that’s for sure is I’m ready to change and focus on what’s important. When I was in my early 20s I used to be obsessed with trends and fast fashion. I only shopped at the mall and went through my clothes so fast that I didn't even think to check if they were ethically made. While in high school I dreamt of attending FIDM. I wanted to design my own clothes and learn the ins and outs of the fashion industry. I even applied in my senior year. Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford to go so changing majors was the only option. Here we are, a few years later and I’m working on an Ethical Fitness Line because I'm still very passionate about fashion but just in a rad-cool way that makes me so happy. (more on this in the near future). The quote below stands out to me and I want to make sure that when my line comes out it is ethically made, it lasts, and it will somehow help the earth.

The best part about creating a collection from the ground up is that you can pick every single detail. Such as will my leggings be made out of recycled water bottles?

So How can we help mother earth? It's simple, you don't have to completely change your whole lifestyle but a little goes a long way, and anything that you do counts. Here is one of my favorite quote on this subject: " We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly"

Earth Facts:

“More than 95 percent of the world's population breathe polluted, dangerous air, study says. More than 95 percent of the world's population is breathing polluted, unsafe air and the hardest-hit areas are in Africa and Asia, a major study of global air pollution has found."

zero waste mindset

What are you going to do to make a difference?

-Stop buying fast fashion
-Shop at thrift stores
-Metal straws
-Reusable grocery bags (so many cute options out there)
-Recycle your foods (great compost for gardens)
-Buy clothes made out of hemp

Fashion is killing the environment. Plain and simple. How can you help?

What is FAST FASHION?

Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers for designs that flow from the catwalk quickly to capture current fashion trends. Fast fashion clothing collections are based on the most recent fashion trends presented at Fashion Week in both the spring and autumn of every year. (Via Wikipedia)

1. Shop less
2. Buy clothes that are from sustainable brands.
3. Don’t just throw out your clothes.
5. Buy second hand (Poshmark, thrift shops) Swap clothes (I do this often with my sister)
6.Rent clothing (rent the runaway)
7. Get involved with local groups that are trying to help this cause

What are you doing to help the environment? I have taken a course by Fashion Revolution To help me understand even more about how I can make a difference and how to spot ethical brands. It’s helping me understand more about being sustainable and giving me all the tools I need to help the planet. One of my favorite questions that are asked often in this course is: Who made my clothes? Have you stopped to think that? Or do you just buy the cheapest and latest trends? Think about it.

Utah restaurants are finally catching on! There is a group named Strawless SLC that announced 100 restaurants have pledged to transition away from plastic straws and use eco-friendly options that are reusable, or biodegradable. I highly recommend you research these causes in your city and see how you can get involved.

A LIST OF ETHICAL BRANDS:

1. Cause Box - A monthly subscription box that curate products that are making the world better. They are a community that cares about people and the planet.
2. PACT They believe that the best ingredients make the best clothes and products. The people who make the clothes are as important as the people who wear them. Style & sustainability can coexist. Doing more-with-less is more. There’s beauty in simplicity.
3. Reformation Every week, we put out new limited edition collections. So no one at the party will be wearing the same dress as you. We like making you feel special. Fashion is the 3rd most polluting industry in the world. We’re cleaning up. ( I LOVE THIS)
4. Alternative Apparel Alternative ensures fair, safe & clean workplace conditions on a global scale. We're also joining the Fashion Revolution because clothes shouldn't come at the expense of our planet or people.
5. People Tree  - They have the best fitness line! Using skills such as hand weaving, hand knitting, or hand embroidery we create employment in rural areas where work is often scarce. All clothes are dyed using low impact dyes, free from harmful azo chemicals that are frequently used in clothing manufacture. We use natural materials where possible, avoiding plastic and toxic substances.

-I will soon go more in-depth with this list and add different categories such as beauty, toys, baby, food, and such.

To conclude this blog post I want to leave you with this: I'm not saying that you should stop buying all the fast fashion clothes or stop shopping at places like Amazon because it's cheap. What I'm saying is that you should do a little bit of research to see what that brand ethical stand is and also if you are buying a piece that is going to be timeless to your wardrobe I don't see why not. So just go for it. Think of that quote I posted above because you don't have to be perfect in everything that you do. As long as you are thinking about these things highlighted in this post when you shop you are golden.

What do you think of this post? Did I miss anything that you think might be important? Let me know in the comment as I dive into this topic more and more here on the blog.
